Home > How do installing home surveillance cameras make a difference in your overall security?

Installing home surveillance cameras has become a very
popular choice among homeowners looking to improve the
security in and around their home. The popularity of this
option is evidenced by the fact that there are countless
video camera and surveillance equipment options to choose
from.
However, the question is -- how does installing a home
security surveillance camera system make a difference in
your overall security? In an effort to answer this question,
we will look at some of the most popular reasons given for
installing video surveillance equipment. Then we will look
at some of the potential hindrances that could reduce the
effectiveness of the reasons cited.
- The mere presence of video surveillance cameras
is a crime deterrent -- This is perhaps the number
one argument people use for installing video
surveillance equipment to protect their home. On the
surface level, this may be a valid argument. There may
be some instances where this is the case. Your video
surveillance network however would have to be convincing
enough to be effective. Then you are met with almost a
catch twenty-two situation. If you install video
surveillance cameras so they are visible enough to the
perpetrator, they may be able to figure out ways to get
around the camera's field of vision. On the other hand,
if you place video cameras in very inconspicuous or
covert locations, then the criminal would not be aware
of their existence in the first place and therefore
would not be deterred by their presence.
The reality is that video surveillance cameras have lost
some of their natural deterrent abilities simply because
they are so commonplace. People have become so
accustomed to their presence that they are either not
affected by them, or they have figured out ways to
outsmart the system. The deterrence factor may work in
some instances, but should never be the sole factor in
your decision.
- Having video surveillance cameras in place will
help provide evidence to prosecute a crime -- This
is likely a true statement. If you have a strong network
of video surveillance cameras in place in your home, you
will likely be able to garner some evidence that a crime
has been committed. The problem with this situation is
that you have not stopped the crime from occurring in
the first place. While it may be comforting to know that
you may have some video evidence in hand to prove your
case, it does not negate the violation. There is also
the chance that in some cases the evidence may not be
strong enough to be of any value.
- Installing video cameras will provide the
homeowner with a strong sense of security -- If you
believe having video surveillance cameras in place will
provide you with extra security and protection, you will
gain an added sense of security. This added sense of
security can be especially effective if your reasons for
installing the equipment in the first place are more
centered on simply wanting to keep a watchful eye on
your home while you are away. Maybe you want to keep an
eye on your beloved pet, or want to be assured of the
fact that you will be alerted the moment something is
amiss. If these are your motivations behind installing
video surveillance equipment then you will likely be
rewarded for your efforts with a heightened sense of
security.
Installing video surveillance equipment can be a very
important step in establishing a secure home for you and
your family. It is however important to realistically
consider what your motivations are behind installing video
surveillance equipment. If you are realistic in your goals
and expectations, you will likely get out of the
installation what you anticipate.
